Where is abdullah senussi

Home Abdullah Al-senussi. Abdullah Al-senussi. A Libyan court passed a death sentence in absentia on Muammar Gaddafi's most prominent son Saif al-Islam today for suppressing peaceful protests during the country's revolution that ended his father's rule. It was his marriage to Gaddafi's wife's sister in the s that brought him into the ruling inner circle and he took up various roles including deputy chief of the external security organisation. He is also said to have been a close adviser to Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the former leader's son, according to leaked US embassy documents.

Wanted by both the French authorities and the International Criminal Court ICC , he fled Libya after Gaddafi's downfall and was arrested as he flew into Mauritania from Morocco on a false passport in The ICC had issued arrest warrants in for Senussi, along with Gaddafi and Saif al-Islam, for crimes against humanity committed particularly against demonstrators in the eastern city of Benghazi at the start of the Libyan uprising in February Observers considered him more of an executor than a mastermind behind the activities of the Gaddafi regime.

He was nicknamed "the butcher" because of his reputation for brutal behaviour. In Senussi was deported from Mauritania to Libya. Successive Libyan governments insisted on prosecuting Senussi on home soil. The ICC ruled in that Libya was able and willing to prosecute Senussi and that it was no longer necessary to send him to The Hague to stand trial.

Senussi was tried along with 36 other Gaddafi-era officials and in July was condemned to death by firing squad along with Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam and seven other former officials. The death sentences still need to be confirmed by the Supreme Court. Despite the Libyan government insisting they could conduct a fair trial , many believe the trial was tainted by the political unrest in the country. The trial had no witnesses brought forward, and no evidence was presented or debated in court.

Intelligence agencies believed Senussi's supposed intricate knowledge of the workings of the Gaddafi regime could shed light on some of its most notorious acts. But according to former Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani, who was in power when the trial began, Libyans had been "deprived of finding out the truth in a fair trial to judge an era of severe tyranny".

Senussi has been accused of other human rights abuses, including his implication in the massacre in of more than 1, inmates at the Abu Salim prison in Tripoli. Whatever his position, he is one of the Libyan leader's ahl al-Khaimah people of the tent — Gaddafi's very closest entourage.

Senussi, 62, was blamed for the killings in Benghazi as well as for the recruitment of foreign mercenaries. Later reports from the rebel capital described how he had been sent there to "keep a lid on the situation".

Senussi first appealed for an end to protests but made clear that if they persisted there would be a violent response. Bloody repression followed and the uprising spread to Tobruk and al-Bayda. Libyans hold him responsible for the notorious massacre of about 1, inmates at Tripoli's Abu Salim prison. The ICC said he was also behind the killing of 13 demonstrators in Benghazi in One of the most influential figures of the Gaddafi regime, former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi was arrested in after the outbreak of th protests, which was ultimately toppled after a year rule.

He ordered the killing of many civilians through the use of excessive force in the protests against Gaddafi that started in Benghazi. Senussi, who was arrested in the capital of Mauritania in , was sentenced to death in Senussi is also associated with the Lockerbie Disaster, with Scottish officials having been reportedly intending to interrogate the former chief following his arrest.

In a rare interview, Saif al-Islam had expressed that he may run for president in the upcoming presidential election. As a consequence, based on this development which came before the general elections of December 24, , it is claimed that the supporters of Saif al-Islam may be aiming to lure Senussi, who is still known to be influential in the security field of Libya, to the side of Saif al-Islam.

Such that, the appointment of al-Aeb has been the focus of some criticism within the country.
