Could we expect anything less from a company that was once run by the former president of Pepsi-Cola? The "Lisa" was the first consumer computer with a graphical user interface GUI. Jobs then switched over to managing the Apple "Macintosh" project that was started by Jef Raskin. Jobs was determined that the new "Macintosh" was going to have a graphical user interface like the "Lisa," but at a considerably lower cost.
Others began working on the Mac at later dates. Seventy-four days after the introduction of the "Macintosh," the company was only able to sell 50, units. At the time, Apple refused to license the OS or the hardware. The k memory was not enough and the onboard floppy drive was difficult to use. The "Macintosh" did have "Lisa's" user friendly GUI, but was missing some of the more powerful features of the "Lisa," such as multitasking and the 1 MB of memory.
Jobs compensated by making sure developers created software for the new "Macintosh. That was also the year that the original founders of Apple left the company.
Steve Wozniak returned to college and Steve Jobs was fired when his difficulties with John Sculley came to a head. Jobs had decided to regain control of the company from Sculley by scheduling a business meeting in China for Sculley so that Jobs could carry out a corporate takeover while Sculley was absent. At launch, the Macintosh was far from a hit, far from being affordable and even far from being completely workable. Yet, the that original model did succeed in forever changing computing not just for fans, but for the entire world. The Mac he unveiled looks little like today's machines. It had a small, monochrome monitor, blocky graphics and the kind of synthesized voice that you wouldn't even get in a toy now.
Yet crucially, it also looked nothing like the computers of its time. By the end of the demonstration, I began to understand that these were things a computer should do. There was a better way. Levy was one of the journalists who got an early demonstration when Apple previewed the Mac in October and November This was part of the company's dual-pronged aim of having everyone talking about the Mac at its launch but also everyone being able to get right away. As well as briefing journalists, Apple was manufacturing the Mac and getting it into resellers.
And there were videos. It's possible that an outside news agency or station decided to cover the Mac but what's more likely is that Apple itself made a series of videos as it does today. There appear to have been around eight of these videos and in a later one, then-CEO John Sculley inadvertently reveals his entire attitude to computing. Compare him to someone else in these videos, someone you'll recognize immediately. And we would rather do that than make 'me too' products.
Let some other companies do that," said Steve Jobs. Perhaps he would come to rue saying that when later Microsoft did exactly this with Windows and much later when Google did so with Android.
Yet if they were copiers, Jobs was not the original either. He did not invent the Macintosh, as much as he would regularly let people believe. In fairness, the Mac we got that day in would not have been what it was without Jobs. It wouldn't have had a mouse, for a start. Linzmayer in Apple Confidential 2. Raskin, however, gets percent credit for starting the project, starting the basic ideas of what the machine would do, and for calling it Macintosh.
He even gets credit for how the mouse turned out as despite his preference for a joystick, it was his work that resulted in the one-button model when others use two or three.
And so when I came to create the Macintosh project I realized you could do all that you have to do with a one-button mouse. It took me a while to convince people that was possible. With a new, one-inch thick titanium body, a low-power chip, and a Apple finally moved the entirety of its all-in-one into its display with the iMac G5, as it added a bit G5 processor to the equation as well. It came with displays as large as 20 inches, and the transparent white mouse and keyboard so many people still remember.
Apple had high-end and consumer-friendly machines, but the Mac mini gave it a real option in the low-end market. It also unified its many product names and ideas into a single family, and made sure every one of its computers had Mac in the title.
Steve Jobs pulled it out of an envelope, just to prove the point — after 24 years of slimming down the PowerBooks, and the iBooks, the MacBook Air was the result. Apple bet on Thunderbolt as a tool for expansion, and brought an entirely new design language to its desktops.
